Akcela at Sync the City: Norwich's 54-Hour Startup Weekend

Tom WoodTom Wood3 min read

Sync the City is Norwich's flagship startup event — 54 hours where participants form teams, build a product, and pitch to judges. It's intense, energising, and one of the best showcases of what the Norwich startup community can produce under pressure.

This year, the Akcela community was well represented.

What Sync the City is

For anyone who hasn't experienced it: Sync the City is a 54-hour startup weekend run by SyncNorwich. Participants arrive on Friday evening and pitch ideas to the room. Teams form around the strongest ideas. Over the weekend, those teams build a working product — researching the market, developing prototypes, and refining their pitch. On Sunday afternoon, every team presents to a panel of judges.

The event has been running for over a decade and has become one of the most respected startup events outside London. What makes it special is the concentration of energy and talent in one room. Developers, designers, marketers, and business people who might never otherwise cross paths spend an intense weekend building something together.

Several real companies have emerged from Sync the City weekends. The event doesn't just simulate the startup experience — it creates the conditions for genuine ventures to begin.

Why startup events matter

Events like Sync the City matter because they lower the barrier to entry. You don't need a business plan, a pitch deck, or funding to participate. You just need an idea and a willingness to try. For many people, events like this are their first exposure to the startup world — and often the moment they realise they could actually build something.

That first exposure is critical for the health of the wider ecosystem. The more people who experience the startup process — even in a compressed, weekend format — the larger the pool of potential founders, team members, and supporters becomes. Some participants will go on to start companies. Others will become early employees, advisers, or investors. Either way, the ecosystem grows.

What the Akcela community contributed

Portfolio founders attended as mentors, helping teams refine their ideas, sharpen their business models, and improve their pitches. Having people in the room who've been through the full journey — from idea to incubation to investment — adds practical depth to the mentoring that event participants receive.

Members of the Akcela team supported the event in various capacities, contributing to judging panels and one-to-one sessions with participating teams. The whole thing took place in the kind of collaborative, high-energy environment that makes Norwich's startup scene special.

The community flywheel

Events like Sync the City create a flywheel effect. The more people who participate, the denser the network becomes. The denser the network, the easier it is for founders to find co-founders, mentors, investors, and early customers. Each event adds another layer of connections — and those connections compound over time.

Akcela's role in the ecosystem includes supporting these events — attending, mentoring, and championing the work that SyncNorwich does to keep the community alive and growing. The connection between a weekend hackathon and a formal incubation programme might not be obvious, but the pipeline is real. People who attend Sync the City discover the ecosystem. Some attend a SyncNorwich meetup. Some explore the Future Tech Programme. And some eventually apply to the incubator.
