Akcela Becomes Tech East Norfolk Residency Partner

Tom WoodTom Wood3 min read

Akcela has been announced as a Tech East Norfolk residency partner. This strengthens our connection with the wider Norfolk and Suffolk tech ecosystem and gives our portfolio companies greater visibility at a regional and national level.

What Tech East does

Tech East is the regional body championing Norfolk and Suffolk's digital businesses. It works to increase the visibility of the East of England's tech sector nationally, connecting local companies with opportunities, investment, and media attention that might otherwise bypass the region.

Their annual Tech East 100 initiative spotlights the region's fastest-growing and most innovative tech companies, bringing national attention to businesses that are building from Norfolk and Suffolk rather than London or Cambridge. They also run events, produce research on the regional digital economy, and advocate for investment in the area's tech infrastructure.

For a region where digital concentration remains below the national average — despite significant potential in areas like FinTech, AgriTech, creative technology, and life sciences — Tech East's advocacy role is important. Someone needs to tell the story of what's happening here. Tech East does that consistently and well.

What the residency means for Akcela

The residency means closer collaboration on events, founder introductions, and regional advocacy. For Akcela, it's another channel for connecting with founders who might benefit from incubation — and for connecting portfolio companies with the wider regional tech community.

For our portfolio companies, it means another route to visibility and connections beyond Norwich. When a portfolio company appears in Tech East content, gets invited to a Tech East event, or connects with another business through the network, that's a direct benefit of being part of Akcela's ecosystem.

Why regional visibility matters for startups

One of the challenges facing Norwich-based startups is invisibility. London companies get coverage by default. Cambridge has a built-in association with deep tech and the university. Norwich has neither advantage — which means the companies building here need to work harder to be noticed.

Tech East helps solve that problem by creating platforms and moments where Norfolk and Suffolk businesses can be seen by the right people. For an early-stage company in the Akcela portfolio, that visibility can lead to customer introductions, partnership conversations, and investor interest that simply wouldn't happen without it.

Building a connected ecosystem

Akcela's effectiveness depends on being deeply embedded in the support ecosystem around Norfolk's startups. We work with SyncNorwich, Connected Innovation, Anglia Capital Group, Ashtons Legal, and now Tech East — each organisation bringing something specific that strengthens the support available to founders.

No single programme or organisation can do everything a startup needs. But a well-connected ecosystem can. Each partnership adds another layer of support, another set of connections, another pathway for founders to access what they need at the right time.
